Muskoka Sea Flea

The Sea Flea — a nimble, homemade hydroplane built from a single sheet of plywood — became an iconic fixture on Muskoka's lakes from the early twentieth century onward. Circuit races were established at Foot's Bay, Port Carling, and Gravenhurst, and some of the biggest names in Canadian motorboat racing history got their start in Muskoka. Easily built by a parent and child from a sheet of plywood, the little craft could skim across the water with a mere ten-horsepower engine on the transom — and with sponsons added, it became a three-point hydroplane. That accessible, build-it-yourself spirit endures today through the Muskoka Seaflea Club and its annual Fleafest gathering, keeping the tradition alive on the same storied waters.
