The bicycle craze of the 1890s took firm hold in Toronto's west end, where neighbourhood clubs like the Swansea Cycling Club embodied a city in motion. The introduction of equal-sized wheels and inflatable rubber tires during the late 1880s produced safer bicycles, sparking a boom in sales — trendy riding clothes became available, spectators lined streets and tracks to watch competitive races, and relationships were cemented on leisurely rides. In 1895, at least 13 Toronto firms built cycles and 90 bike stores sold an estimated 18,000 bicycles to an eager public. For west-end riders, the lakes, ravines, and quiet gravel roads beyond the city's edge made cycling both sport and liberation — a two-wheeled freedom that defined a generation before the automobile arrived to claim the streets.
